OxfordShir - Community Choir

OxfordShirOxfordShir (Shir is the Hebrew word for song), was founded in 1994. Our repertoire includes Hebrew and Yiddish melodies, traditional folk-songs and music specially arranged for us..

In addition to giving regular concerts, OxfordShir is frequently invited to sing at Weddings, Bar and Bat mitzvahs as well as taking part in many Interfaith Services, the most notable being the Service of Reconciliation in Gloucester Cathedral The amazing acoustics of the vast domed Cathedral gave our voices a new and pleasing timbre which delighted us all.

OxfordShir have been invited on two consecutive years to take part in a Holocaust Memorial Service at Keble College together with the prize-winning Keble College Choir. OxfordShir also took part in the CCJ (Council of Christians and Jews) impressive and successful Interfaith Chanukah/Advent Concert in the Manchester Harris College Chapel. Refreshments afterwards included delicious latkes and mince pies! It doesn’t get better than that!!

OxfordShir is always ready to welcome new members. There is no need to be able to read music, just to enjoy singing. Rehearsals, usually on Thursdays, are held several times each term at 7.45pm at the Oxford Jewish Centre, Richmond Road. Rehearsal dates are published both in the OJC Newsletter and in the Oxford Menorah Magazine.
